What a Millwork RFI Usually Means, and How to Prevent the Next One
Millwork RFIs cluster into a small number of recurring categories. Each one points at a specific thing the drawings did not say.
Millwork requests for information are not random. They cluster into a handful of categories, and each category points at a specific piece of information the documents did not carry.
Reading them that way turns a nuisance into a checklist for the next project.
Dimensional Conflicts
The most common RFI is a dimension that cannot be achieved because the field condition differs from the drawing.
This is not a documentation failure so much as a sequencing one. It appears when fabrication proceeded from design dimensions rather than a field survey, or when the survey happened before the abutting surfaces were final.
Prevention is a scheduled field verification milestone after the substrate and adjacent finishes are complete, and shop drawings drafted from that survey.
Grain, Match, and Sequence
The second cluster is the fabricator asking which way the grain runs, where the match centers, or whether the sequence continues past a corner.
Every one of these is a design decision arriving as a question because the elevation did not show it. The fabricator is doing the right thing by asking; the alternative is guessing.
Prevention is grain direction on every visible face, match centerline, and panel joint locations on the design elevation.
Interface Conditions
The third cluster is what happens where the millwork meets something else — a stone return, a glass partition, an out-of-plumb wall, a ceiling that is not level.
These arrive as questions about reveal dimensions, scribe treatment, and which surface governs alignment.
Prevention is sections through the critical interfaces, stated reveal dimensions, and a sentence in the specification saying which condition governs when two cannot both be satisfied.
Hardware and Coordination
The fourth cluster is hardware that was called out generically, or an integrated element whose responsibility is unclear — lighting drivers, appliance panels, access for service.
Prevention is model numbers rather than descriptions, and an explicit statement of who supplies and who installs at every integrated element.
Tolerance Conflicts
The fifth is the run that cannot be both level and parallel to the floor, or flush at two surfaces that are not coplanar.
The fabricator is asking which requirement to break. Prevention is deciding in advance and saying so.
Reading the Pattern
The productive move at the end of a project is to sort the millwork RFIs by category and count them.
A cluster of grain and match questions says the elevations need more information next time. A cluster of dimensional conflicts says the field verification is happening too early in the sequence. A cluster of interface questions says the section drawings are thin.
The categories are stable across projects, which means the fix is stable too — and it is almost always a drawing, produced once, rather than a process change.
Answering Well
While the project is running, the useful posture is speed and specificity. An RFI blocks fabrication, and fabrication slots do not wait.
Answer the question asked, state what governs, and where the answer changes the design intent, mark it on the drawing rather than only in the response. The next reader will have the drawing, not the correspondence.
