Millwork Drafting: Why Field Dimensions Beat Design Dimensions

Buildings are not built to the dimensions on the drawings. Millwork drafted from design dimensions rather than field measurements is drafted to a building that does not exist.

Buildings are not built to the dimensions on the drawings. They are built to tolerances, and those tolerances accumulate.

Millwork drafted from the design dimensions is drafted to a building that does not exist. In catalog casework the fillers absorb the difference. In custom work, where the whole point is that the millwork resolves to the architecture, there is nothing to absorb it.

How Much Deviation Is Normal

A wall framed and finished to standard tolerance can be out of plumb by a quarter inch over eight feet and be entirely within spec. Floors are permitted meaningful deviation over a ten-foot run. Openings vary from their nominal dimensions in both directions.

None of this is defective work. It is construction performing to the tolerances the industry publishes.

Now run a twelve-foot tall paneled wall with a quarter-inch reveal against it. A quarter inch of plumb deviation consumes the entire reveal at one end. A run of flush-inset casework across an out-of-level floor either follows the floor and loses its level top line, or holds level and opens a visible wedge at the base.

The millwork did not fail. It was drafted to a dimension the building does not have.

When the Measurement Has to Happen

Field verification sits at a specific point in the sequence, and both directions of error are costly.

Measure too early — before substrate, before flooring, before the stone is set — and the dimensions capture conditions that will still change. Measure too late and fabrication cannot start, and the shop slot that was reserved goes to another project.

The workable window is after the surfaces the millwork bears on or meets are in their final position, and before the fabrication release date. On most projects that means after substrate and rough finishes, with specific coordination around flooring and stone.

This belongs on the schedule as a milestone with a date, not as an assumption. It is on the critical path, and it is routinely omitted from schedules that show fabrication starting the day after shop drawing approval.

What Gets Measured

A field measure that captures only opening width and height is not a field measure.

Plumb of every wall the work meets, at multiple heights. Level of the floor across the full run, at multiple points. Square at every corner the work turns. Actual finished dimensions of openings. Locations of every service penetration, outlet, switch, and access requirement. Ceiling height at both ends of every tall run, and in the middle.

Documented, dated, and issued as a record — because if the building moves after the measure, the question of who owns the change is settled by the record.

Scribes Are Designed, Not Improvised

The mechanism that lets precisely fabricated millwork meet an imprecise building is the scribe: material left proud at the interface, cut to fit on site.

Scribe allowance is a design decision. Too little and the piece will not fit the deviation found in the field. Too much and there is a visible band of material at every edge, which on a minimal contemporary detail is exactly what the design was trying to eliminate.

Sizing it correctly requires knowing what the field conditions are, which requires the measure. Sizing it by shop standard, without the survey, is how a piece arrives that cannot be made to fit.

The Sequence That Works

Design set issued. Field survey after the bearing and abutting surfaces are final. Shop drawings drafted from the survey, with scribe allowances sized to the deviations found. Substantive review against both the design set and the survey. Approval. Fabrication release.

Compressing any step in that sequence moves the problem downstream, and downstream is where it is most expensive.
