Millwork Shop Drawings: What to Review Before You Stamp Approved

Approving shop drawings transfers a set of decisions from the fabricator to the reviewer. Knowing which decisions are in that set is what makes the review meaningful.

Shop drawings are the fabricator's interpretation of the design, translated into the information a shop needs to build from. Approving them is not a formality. It moves a defined set of decisions from the fabricator's responsibility to the reviewer's.

Knowing which decisions sit in that set is what separates a substantive review from a stamp.

Dimensions Against the Building

The first check is whether the drawings reflect field conditions or design conditions.

Custom millwork is built to the building as it exists. If the shop drawings carry the dimensions from the architectural set rather than from a field survey, either the survey has not happened or it has been ignored. Both are worth catching before fabrication releases.

Look for evidence: noted field verification, dimensions that differ from the design set in ways consistent with real construction, dimension strings that close. Casework dimensioned to perfectly round numbers in a building that has been framed and finished deserves a question.

Grain Direction, Match, and Sequence

This is where design intent is most often lost, because it is the information least likely to survive the translation from architectural elevation to shop drawing.

Confirm that grain direction is indicated on every visible face. Confirm the match type is called out and matches the specification. For sequenced work, confirm the elevation shows the centerline of the match, the panel joints, and the leaf sequence.

If the shop drawings show a book-matched elevation with a centerline different from the one the architectural elevation implies, that is a real discrepancy and it will be built as drawn on the shop set.

Joints, Reveals, and Where the Millwork Meets the Building

Every place the work meets something else is a decision, and shop drawings are where those decisions become explicit.

Check the reveal dimensions at every interface: to walls, ceilings, floors, stone, glass, and adjacent casework. Check how scribes are handled at out-of-plumb and out-of-level conditions, and whether the scribe allowance is sufficient for the conditions the survey found.

Check panel joint locations against the elevation. A joint falling in a different place than the design shows is the most visible possible deviation and the easiest to catch on paper.

Hardware, by Model Number

Hardware called out generically will be supplied generically.

Confirm specific manufacturers and model numbers for hinges, slides, pulls, locks, and any specialty mechanism. Confirm load ratings against actual drawer sizes and expected contents. Confirm that soft-close, push-to-open, or any specified action is indicated per unit rather than assumed globally.

Where the design calls for integrated or concealed pulls, confirm the detail is drawn rather than noted, because the execution varies widely.

Interfaces With Other Trades

Millwork rarely fails on its own. It fails where it meets electrical, plumbing, HVAC, or appliances.

Check that cutouts, chases, access panels, and clearances are shown. Check that integrated lighting is coordinated with the electrical scope — who supplies, who installs, where the driver sits, how it is accessed for service. Check appliance panel dimensions against the actual appliance cut sheets rather than against nominal sizes.

Finish and Grade

Confirm the finish system, sheen, and color reference are stated, and that they match the finish schedule. Confirm the grade of work is named and matches the specification.

If samples are required before finishing, confirm the drawing says so and the schedule allows for it.

Reviewing With Comments Rather Than Rejection

Most shop drawing sets are approvable with comments. The productive posture is to mark the discrepancies precisely, state what governs where the shop set and the design set differ, and return them quickly.

A slow review is expensive in a way that is easy to underestimate: fabrication is sequenced, and a set sitting on a desk is a shop slot going to another job.
