Millwork Drawings: From Design Intent to Fabrication-Ready
There are two distinct drawing sets in every millwork scope, produced by different parties for different purposes. Confusing them is what produces work that is built correctly and looks wrong.
Every millwork scope involves two distinct drawing sets. The design intent set, produced by the architect or designer, describes what the work is meant to be. The fabrication set, produced by the shop, describes how it will be built.
They serve different purposes and contain different information. Most millwork that gets built correctly and still looks wrong can be traced to something that belonged in the first set and only appeared in the second.
What Design Intent Drawings Have to Carry
The design set does not need to describe construction. It needs to describe every decision that the fabricator cannot make correctly on its own.
Elevations of every millwork face, dimensioned, with panel and door joint locations shown. Sections through the critical conditions — where the work meets the ceiling, the floor, the stone, the glass. Reveal dimensions where they are part of the design rather than a shop convention.
Material call-outs by species and cut. Grain direction on every visible face. Match type and, for sequenced work, the centerline the match is composed around.
Finish system and color reference. Hardware selections, by manufacturer and model where the selection is design-relevant. Integrated lighting locations and intended effect.
The test is straightforward: could a competent fabricator who has never spoken to the designer build this and produce the intended result? Anything that fails that test is a decision being delegated by omission.
What Fabrication Drawings Add
The shop set takes those decisions and resolves them into buildable information.
Field-verified dimensions. Carcass construction and joinery. Panel sizes and material takeoffs. Edge treatments. Hardware attachment. Assembly sequence and unit breakdown for transport and installation. Scribe allowances sized to the actual field conditions.
This is the fabricator's expertise and it is where a good shop adds value. It is not where design decisions should be getting made for the first time.
The Handoff Is Where Intent Is Lost
The predictable failure is a design set that shows a beautiful elevation with a material note and no grain direction, no match centerline, no reveal dimensions, and no joint layout.
The fabricator has to build something. It will make reasonable choices — grain running the way it usually runs, joints where the material yields best, reveals at shop standard. Every one of those choices is defensible, and collectively they produce an elevation that is not the one that was drawn.
This surfaces at shop drawing review, if the review is substantive, and at installation if it is not. Catching it at review costs a revision cycle. Catching it at installation costs the elevation.
Drawing Less, Better
The response is not to draw everything. A design set that attempts to document construction wastes effort on information the shop will supersede, and creates conflicts between two sets describing the same thing differently.
The efficient design set is thorough about intent and silent about construction. It says what the material is, how the grain runs, where the joints fall, what the reveals are, and how the pieces relate. It leaves joinery, carcass construction, and assembly to the shop.
That division is also the cleanest basis for comparable bids. Fabricators pricing a set that specifies intent precisely and construction not at all are pricing the same outcome by their own methods, which is what competitive bidding is supposed to produce.
One Practical Test Before Issuing
Take the elevation and ask, for each visible face: which way does the grain run, what is it made of, where are the joints, and what is the gap at each edge.
If any of those four has no answer on the drawings, the answer will be supplied by someone else.
