Reveal, Scribe, or Filler: Detailing Millwork to Meet a Real Building
Every place millwork meets the building is a deviation that has to go somewhere. There are three ways to absorb it, and only one of them is invisible.
Precisely fabricated millwork meets a building built to construction tolerances. The difference between the two has to go somewhere, and there are three places to put it.
Choosing among them is a design decision. Failing to choose means the shop chooses, and the shop chooses what it normally builds.
The Reveal
A reveal is a deliberate gap between the millwork and the adjacent surface, held as a consistent dimension and read as a shadow line.
It works because a gap of a stated width is forgiving: a wall out of plumb a quarter inch over eight feet changes a half-inch reveal from a half inch to a quarter or three quarters, and at that scale the eye reads it as a shadow line rather than as a taper.
The narrower the reveal, the less deviation it tolerates. A quarter-inch reveal against a wall with a quarter inch of plumb deviation closes completely at one end. Specifying a minimal reveal commits the project to tighter substrate tolerances than the trades are normally held to, and that has to be said to the trades who build the substrate.
State the reveal dimension. Left unstated, it becomes shop standard, and shop standards vary enough to change the character of the detail.
The Scribe
A scribe is material left proud at the interface and cut on site to follow the actual condition.
Done well, it is invisible: the millwork appears to meet the wall exactly, with no gap and no taper, because the edge was cut to match the wall as it exists. This is the detail for conditions where the millwork must appear to be built into the architecture.
It requires three things. Sufficient material left at the edge, sized from the field survey. Access to cut and fit it on site. And a finish that can be repaired at the cut edge, or a detail where the cut edge is not visible.
Scribe allowance sized by shop standard rather than by survey is the common failure. Too little and the piece cannot be made to fit. Too much and there is a visible band of material at every edge, which on a minimal contemporary detail defeats the intent.
The Filler
A filler is a separate piece that spans between the millwork and the building.
It is the most forgiving and the most visible. On catalog casework it is standard and expected. On custom work it usually reads as an admission that the millwork did not resolve to the architecture, which is the thing custom work is for.
Fillers remain appropriate at conditions where a scribe is impractical — an interface that cannot be reached for site cutting, or a deviation too large for a reasonable scribe allowance.
Choosing per Condition
The productive approach is per interface rather than per project.
Reveals where the design wants articulation and the substrate can be held. Scribes where the millwork must appear continuous with the architecture and the edge can be cut and finished. Fillers where neither is practical, detailed deliberately rather than as a default.
Each of these belongs on a section drawing with a dimension. A section through every critical interface is a small amount of drawing that removes the largest category of millwork RFI.
