Frameless and face frame are not quality tiers. They commit the project to different hardware, different interior dimensions, and different ways of meeting the building.
Frameless and face frame construction are frequently discussed as though one were the premium option. They are not quality tiers. They are different systems, and each commits the project to consequences that show up long after the choice is made.
Frameless
Frameless construction — European, or 32mm — has no frame on the front of the cabinet. The carcass panel edges are finished and form the visible front edge, and hardware mounts directly to the cabinet sides.
The interior is the full width of the box, which yields noticeably more usable space and allows full-extension drawers at nearly the cabinet width. Drawer boxes are wider for the same opening.
Hardware is a system: cup hinges bored into the door and mounted to the side panel, with three-way adjustment. That adjustability is genuine and is the reason frameless runs can be aligned precisely across long elevations.
It suits flush overlay detailing naturally, which is why it dominates contemporary work. The narrow, consistent gaps between fronts are produced by the hardware's adjustment range rather than by the frame.
Face Frame
Face frame construction applies a solid wood frame to the front of the carcass. Doors mount to the frame, either overlaying it or set within it.
The frame adds rigidity, which matters on tall or wide units. It provides a solid, shapeable surface at the front edge that takes a profile and takes wear. And it gives something substantial to scribe to the building, which is a real advantage in irregular conditions and in renovation work.
It supports flush inset detailing cleanly, because the frame provides the opening the door sits within.
The cost is interior capacity: the frame reduces the opening, so drawer boxes are narrower and access is tighter.
Consequences That Arrive Later
Hardware availability. Frameless commits to system hardware; face frame uses different hinges and mounting. Replacing a hinge in ten years is easier when the system is common.
Scribing. A face frame can be cut back generously to follow an irregular wall. A frameless carcass has less material at the front edge to work with, and a scribe filler is often added.
Repairability. A damaged face frame member can sometimes be repaired in place. A damaged frameless carcass edge is the panel edge, and repair is harder.
Interior fittings. Pull-outs, inserts, and closet components are dimensioned to opening width, and the two systems produce different openings for the same nominal cabinet.
Choosing
Frameless where interior capacity, flush overlay detailing, and long precisely aligned runs are the priorities — which describes most contemporary work.
Face frame where flush inset is the detail, where the units are tall or wide enough that frame rigidity matters, where the building is irregular enough that generous scribing is needed, or where the design language is traditional.
Specifying It
Name the construction type, name the interface style, state the reveal or margin, and name the hardware system.
Those four together describe one cabinet. Any one of them missing leaves a decision that will be resolved by whoever builds it, and the four interact — a specification calling for flush inset with frameless construction and no further detail is asking for something the shop will have to interpret.
