Shop Finishing Versus Field Finishing, and Why It Changes the Schedule

Where the finish is applied determines its quality, the schedule, and who is responsible when it is damaged. It is not primarily a cost decision.

Where the finish gets applied determines how good it is, when the work can be installed, and who owns the repair when something scratches it.

It is treated as a cost comparison more often than it should be, because the consequences are mostly about schedule and quality.

What the Shop Can Do That the Site Cannot

A finishing room is a controlled environment: filtered air, controlled temperature and humidity, spray equipment, and the ability to lay a panel flat.

That combination produces results a job site cannot match. Dust control alone accounts for most of the difference — an airborne particle landing in a wet film is a defect, and a construction site has airborne particles. Catalyzed and UV-cured systems generally require shop conditions outright.

Laying panels flat matters more than it sounds. Spraying a vertical surface limits film build before the coating runs, so vertical application means more coats to reach the same thickness.

So shop finishing is the default for quality work, and the specification should say so.

What Still Has to Happen on Site

Some finishing is unavoidable in the field.

Scribed edges are cut on site by definition, and the cut edge needs sealing at minimum. Field joints between units require touch-up. Installation damage requires repair. Some elements are too large to transport finished, or are assembled in place.

The specification should acknowledge this and require the fabricator to supply touch-up materials from the same batch, along with instructions.

Repairability Varies by System

Not all finish systems can be touched up invisibly.

Penetrating oils and hardwax systems are the most forgiving — a damaged area can be cleaned, re-oiled, and blended, and this is repeatable over the life of the work.

Catalyzed systems are the least forgiving. Once cured, they do not accept new material invisibly, and a repair typically means refinishing the whole component.

This should influence the choice on surfaces likely to take damage. Specifying a catalyzed finish on an element that will be hit by luggage or cleaning equipment guarantees an eventual full refinish rather than a touch-up.

Sequencing With Other Trades

Shop-finished millwork arriving on an active site has to be protected, and protection has to be specified and enforced.

The recurring failure is millwork installed before wet trades are complete: painting, taping, stone setting, and flooring all generate contact and airborne contamination. Millwork protected only with a plastic wrap and goodwill will be damaged.

Either the millwork goes in after those trades, or protection is specified in detail and someone is accountable for it. Both are legitimate; neither happens by default.

What It Does to the Schedule

Shop finishing moves time earlier: samples have to be approved before production finishing, and finishing occupies a shop slot after fabrication.

Field finishing moves time later and onto the critical path at the end of the job, when there is least slack, and into conditions that may not be suitable. A field finish applied in an unconditioned building in winter may not cure properly at all.

The schedule risk at the end of a project is usually worse than the schedule risk in the middle, which is one more reason shop finishing is the default.
