Ultraviolet light changes the colour of wood and degrades finish films. Every interior experiences this. Some interiors experience it far more than others.

Altitude increases UV intensity meaningfully, and contemporary architecture in mountain settings tends toward very large areas of glazing facing exactly the views that carry the most sun. The combination is a demanding one for wood interiors, and it is worth designing for rather than discovering.

What Actually Changes

Two separate processes, with different timelines.

The wood itself changes colour. Species respond differently and in different directions: walnut lightens and mellows, cherry darkens substantially, white oak shifts toward amber. This happens in the wood, beneath the finish, and it cannot be reversed by refinishing.

The finish film degrades. Solvent-based systems amber, and all film finishes eventually lose clarity and can chalk or check under sustained exposure.

The first is often welcome — the mellowing of walnut over years is part of why people specify it. The problem is not change; it is uneven change.

Uneven Exposure Is the Real Failure

A wall of millwork where one end sits in direct sun through a large window and the other is in shadow will develop a visible gradient within a year or two.

Furniture and art placed against a wood surface leave their outline permanently when they are eventually moved. A rug protecting part of a wood floor produces the same effect.

None of these are finish failures. They are a record of light exposure, and they are the outcome most owners actually complain about.

What Reduces It

Glazing is the largest lever and it sits outside the millwork scope. Coatings and glass assemblies that filter ultraviolet substantially reduce the transmitted dose, and where a project has significant wood interiors with large glazing, this is worth raising during the envelope decisions rather than after.

Within the finish scope, systems with ultraviolet absorbers slow film degradation. Waterborne systems do not amber the way solvent systems do, which removes one of the two colour shifts.

Pigmented and toned finishes are more lightfast than clear ones, because the pigment absorbs some of the energy before it reaches the wood.

Species selection matters. Where a wall will take sustained direct sun, choosing a species with a milder response, or accepting and designing for the change, is more honest than specifying one that will shift dramatically and hoping.

Setting the Expectation in Writing

Colour change under light exposure is normal behaviour, not a defect, and the specification should say so.

Stating it explicitly, with the expectation that exposed and unexposed areas will diverge, converts a future complaint into a documented characteristic. Where the owner will not accept it, that is a design conversation to have before the material is selected.

Practical Guidance for the Owner

Two pieces of advice are worth passing on in the closeout documents.

Move objects that sit against wood surfaces periodically during the first year or two, when the rate of change is highest, so the surface ages evenly rather than recording an outline.

Where window treatments exist, using them during the highest-exposure hours in the first period after installation slows the initial change substantially, which is when most of it happens.

Neither is a burden. Both are things nobody knows unless they are told.
