Stain, Dye, or Natural: Controlling Color on Figured Hardwood

Color on wood is not paint. Pigment, dye, and toner behave differently on figured and porous species, and the difference between them decides whether the grain survives.

Coloring wood is not painting it. The material is porous, and it is porous unevenly, which means anything applied to it is absorbed at different rates across the surface.

Understanding how the three approaches carry color is what determines whether the finished elevation shows the grain or obscures it.

Pigment Stain

Pigment stains carry solid particles suspended in a carrier. The carrier penetrates, the particles lodge in the pore structure and in any open grain.

Because pigment collects where the wood is most porous, it emphasizes grain contrast — earlywood takes more than latewood, and the figure is accentuated. On open-pore species like oak this reads well and is often the intent.

It is also why pigment stain blotches on species with uneven density. Maple, birch, cherry, and pine absorb inconsistently, and the result is patchy rather than uniform.

Pigment obscures more of the wood as concentration increases, and heavy pigment approaches an opaque coating.

Dye

Dyes are dissolved rather than suspended, so they penetrate the fibre itself rather than lodging in the pore.

Because they colour the wood uniformly regardless of pore structure, they produce even colour on species where pigment would blotch, and they preserve figure and depth rather than masking it. On highly figured material — curly, quilted, or burl — dye is the way to intensify colour without killing the figure.

The tradeoffs are lightfastness, which is generally lower than pigment, and difficulty of correction, since dye penetrates deeply and is hard to remove.

Many good finishing schedules use both: a dye to establish the base tone evenly, then a pigment or glaze to add depth and emphasize the pore.

Toner

Toner is colour suspended in the finish itself, applied as a coat rather than into the wood.

Because it sits in the film, it colours everything uniformly, including the pore. This makes it the tool for correcting colour variation between components — a sapwood board that reads too light, a door that came from a different part of the flitch.

Used heavily it produces a surface where the colour floats above the grain, which reads as artificial. Used sparingly for correction, it is what makes a package look consistent.

Blotching Is Preventable

On blotch-prone species, applying pigment stain directly is a known failure.

Conditioning — a washcoat that partially seals the surface before staining — evens the absorption. Gel stains, which sit more on the surface, reduce it. Dye avoids the mechanism entirely.

Which approach to use depends on the species and the target colour, and it belongs in the finishing schedule rather than being left to the finisher's habit.

Variation Is the Real Problem

The difficulty in a large package is rarely hitting the target colour. It is hitting it consistently across material that varies.

Walnut with wide heartwood-to-sapwood range, white oak from multiple flitches, and any species across a large order will not take colour identically. Achieving a consistent elevation requires sorting material by tone before finishing, adjusting the schedule per group, and using toner to close the remaining gap.

This is labour, and it is the difference between a package that reads as one material and one that reads as assorted.

What to Specify

The target colour by reference, on the actual species and cut. Whether variation is to be minimized or embraced. And approved samples showing the range — not one sample, but the lightest and darkest acceptable — so acceptance has a defined boundary.
