Wood Movement, and Why Quartersawn Stock Stays Flat

Wood moves with humidity, in predictable directions and predictable proportions. Detailing that ignores this produces failures that look like defects and are not.

Wood exchanges moisture with the air around it until it reaches equilibrium, and it changes dimension as it does. This continues for the life of the material.

The movement is predictable in direction and roughly predictable in magnitude. Detailing that accounts for it produces millwork that survives seasonal cycling. Detailing that does not produces cracked panels, split frames, and binding doors that read as defects and are not.

The Three Directions Are Not Equal

Wood moves very differently along its three axes.

Along the grain, movement is negligible — a fraction of a percent over the full range from green to oven dry. For practical purposes, length is stable.

Tangentially, along the annual rings, movement is greatest. Across the growth rings, radially, movement is roughly half the tangential figure.

That two-to-one ratio between tangential and radial movement is the entire reason the cut matters.

Why the Cut Changes the Behavior

In a plain sawn board, the annual rings run roughly parallel to the face. The board's width is therefore mostly in the tangential direction — the direction of maximum movement. It expands and contracts across its width substantially, and because the rings want to straighten as moisture changes, the board tends to cup away from the heart.

In a quartersawn board, the rings run roughly perpendicular to the face. The width is now in the radial direction, so it moves roughly half as much, and the thickness takes the tangential movement instead. Since thickness is small, that movement is small in absolute terms. The board stays flat.

This is why quartersawn stock is specified for wide panels, for door stiles and rails, and for any component where flatness over time matters more than material cost.

Equilibrium Moisture Content Is a Local Number

Wood equilibrates to the relative humidity around it, and that number is not the same everywhere or in every season.

An interior held in a narrow humidity band year round is a benign environment. An interior that swings widely between seasons — heated dry air in winter, humid air in summer — cycles the material through meaningful dimensional change twice a year.

Millwork fabricated at one moisture content and installed into a space at a very different one will move as it equilibrates, and that first movement is often the largest it will ever experience. It typically appears within the first heating season, which is why so many millwork complaints arrive months after a clean handover.

Detailing That Accommodates Movement

The principle is straightforward: allow the material to move, and do not restrain it across its width.

Frame-and-panel construction exists for this reason. The panel floats in a groove, free to expand and contract, while the frame — whose width is stable along the grain — holds the dimension. Gluing the panel into the groove converts a design that accommodates movement into one that cracks.

Wide solid tops are attached with fasteners in slotted holes or with buttons that allow the top to move relative to the base. Long runs are broken with expansion allowance rather than fixed rigidly at both ends. Breadboard ends are fastened at the center and slotted outward.

Veneered panels on stable substrates sidestep the issue largely, which is one of the reasons veneer dominates large architectural faces.

Acclimation Before Installation

Material delivered to site should reach equilibrium with the space before it is installed, in the conditions the space will actually hold — which means the building's climate control running, not a slab that was poured last week.

Skipping acclimation moves the movement to after installation, when it is visible and expensive rather than absorbed in the shop.
