Solid Stock, Veneer Core, or MDF Core: The Substrate Decision
The substrate under a veneer face determines flatness, screw hold, weight, and whether the panel telegraphs. It is a performance decision, not a cost decision.
The substrate under a veneer face is invisible and determines a great deal: how flat the panel stays, how well it holds a screw, how much it weighs, and whether the face telegraphs what is underneath.
Treating it as a cost line rather than a performance decision is how panels end up flat in the shop and not flat on the wall.
Veneer Core
Veneer core plywood is built from cross-banded wood plies. It is the strongest of the panel options in bending, the lightest, and by a wide margin the best at holding a screw.
The cross-banded construction makes it dimensionally stable across its width. It is the appropriate substrate for cabinet carcasses, for anything carrying load, and for anywhere hardware fastens directly into the panel.
Its weakness is surface flatness. The plies underneath can telegraph through a thin face veneer, appearing as subtle ridges under raking light or under a high-gloss finish. Higher grades with more plies and better core stock reduce this substantially, and specifying the grade rather than just the type is what controls it.
MDF Core
Medium density fiberboard is homogeneous, with no grain and no plies. Its surface is exceptionally flat and it machines to a crisp profiled edge that holds paint without any grain telegraphing.
This makes it the substrate of choice for painted work and for veneered panels where absolute flatness is the requirement — high-gloss faces, large flush elevations, anything examined under raking light.
The tradeoffs are weight, which is considerable at architectural panel sizes, poor screw hold in the face and worse in the edge, and vulnerability to moisture. Standard MDF exposed to water swells irreversibly. Moisture-resistant grades exist and should be specified where any exposure is plausible.
Particleboard Core
Particleboard is lighter and less expensive than MDF, with reasonable flatness and adequate performance for a great deal of casework.
It is used widely and legitimately in commercial casework, typically with a veneer or laminate face. Screw hold is weaker than veneer core, and edge treatment matters more because the edge is fragile. Moisture performance is poor without a resistant grade.
Combination Core
Combination core panels place MDF layers beneath the face over a veneer core center, aiming at the flatness of MDF with better screw hold and lower weight.
They have become common in precision custom fabrication for exactly this reason, and they are a reasonable default for veneered casework where both flatness and fastening matter.
Solid Stock
Solid lumber remains correct where the component has to be shaped, profiled, or take wear on an exposed edge: face frames, door stiles and rails, mouldings, edges, and any element where the wood is worked rather than faced.
It is also the component that moves, which is why frame-and-panel construction exists and why solid tops are attached with fasteners that allow movement.
Specifying It
State the core type and the grade, by application rather than globally: carcass, exposed veneered panel, painted panel, and edge or profiled component are four different answers.
A single blanket substrate call-out across a package will be either over-specified in the utility scope or under-specified on the feature elevation, and usually both.
