Relative Humidity Swings and the Millwork Details That Survive Them

Interiors that cycle between very dry and humid conditions move millwork twice a year. The details that survive are chosen for the range, not the average.

An interior held in a narrow humidity band year round is a benign environment for wood. An interior that swings from very dry in winter to humid in summer cycles every solid component through meaningful dimensional change twice a year.

Where the Hard Cases Are

The demanding environments are not the humid ones. They are the ones with wide swings, and particularly the ones that get very dry.

Heated interiors in cold climates can drop to very low relative humidity through a long winter, especially at altitude and especially in buildings without humidification. Wood equilibrating to that condition shrinks, and it shrinks most across the width of plain sawn components.

Then the season turns, the humidity rises, and everything expands again. Panels that shrank away from their grooves close back up; joints that opened close; doors that had generous margins begin to bind.

The Failures Are Predictable

Frame-and-panel doors show an unfinished stripe at the panel edge, where the panel shrank and exposed wood that was never finished because it was inside the groove at finishing time.

Wide solid tops crack, when they were fastened rigidly at both ends and could not move.

Long runs open joints at the ends, or buckle, depending on which direction the season went and how they were fixed.

Flush inset doors bind in summer, when the margin sized in a dry winter closed up.

None of these are defects in fabrication. They are the material behaving as it does, in details that did not allow for it.

Details That Accommodate

Frame and panel, with the panel floating free in its groove, never glued. Finishing the panel before assembly, so the portion that later becomes exposed is already finished.

Solid tops attached with slotted fasteners or buttons that allow movement relative to the base. Fixed at one point, free everywhere else.

Long runs broken into segments with allowance between them rather than fixed rigidly end to end.

Veneered panels on stable substrates wherever a wide flat surface is required, which sidesteps the issue almost entirely and is a large part of why veneer dominates architectural faces.

Margins on flush inset doors sized for the expanded condition rather than the condition on the day of installation.

Humidification Is a Specification Question

Where the design depends on tight tolerances in solid wood, the building's humidity control becomes part of the millwork specification rather than a separate mechanical concern.

A specification can reasonably state the humidity range the millwork is designed for, and state that maintaining it is a condition of the warranty. That is not passing the problem along; it is making explicit a dependency that exists whether or not anyone writes it down.

Acclimation Before Installation

Material should reach equilibrium with the space before installation, in the conditions the space will actually hold — with climate control running, not with a slab poured last week and doors propped open.

The first equilibration is usually the largest movement the material will ever make. Absorbing it in the shop or on site before installation is cheap. Absorbing it after installation is a punch list item that arrives months later, during the first heating season, when everyone has gone home.
