How the Cut Changes the Board: Quarter Sawn, Rift Sawn, and Plain Sawn Millwork

Every board carries a record of how it was cut from the log. The angle between the saw and the annual rings determines the grain pattern on the face, how the board moves with humidity, and how much of the log ends up as usable stock.

It is one of the few specification decisions that governs appearance and performance simultaneously, which is why it belongs in the drawings rather than in a conversation with the shop.

Plain Sawn

Plain sawn — also called flat sawn — is the log cut in parallel slices straight through. The annual rings meet the face at a low angle, generally under thirty degrees.

This produces the cathedral figure most people picture when they picture wood: nested arches sweeping up the face of the board. It is the highest-yield cut, because the sawyer works straight through the log with minimal repositioning and minimal waste. It is consequently the least expensive.

The tradeoff is movement. A plain sawn board expands and contracts across its width roughly twice as much as a quarter sawn board of the same species, and it is more prone to cupping, because the rings on the face want to straighten as the board dries or takes on moisture.

For a wide panel in a stable interior, that is often acceptable. For a long run of stile-and-rail doors in a building that swings from thirty percent humidity to seventy, it is a detail waiting to fail.

Quarter Sawn

Quarter sawn means the log is quartered first, then each quarter is cut so the blade meets the annual rings at roughly sixty to ninety degrees.

On the face, this produces a tight, straight, vertical grain line — visually calm, dimensionally consistent, and well suited to rectilinear joinery. In white oak, the perpendicular cut also slices through the medullary rays, exposing the flecked figure that gives quarter sawn oak its distinctive appearance. Some specifiers want that fleck emphatically; others want it avoided entirely.

The performance gain is real. Quarter sawn stock moves substantially less across its width and resists cupping, because the rings run through the thickness rather than across the face.

The cost is yield. Quartering the log and repositioning for each cut produces more waste and takes more labor, and it produces narrower boards. Expect a meaningful premium.

Rift Sawn

Rift sawn is cut at roughly thirty to sixty degrees to the rings — between the other two, and typically produced by cutting radially around the log.

It gives the straightest, most uniform grain of the three, and in oak it largely avoids the medullary fleck. When a specifier wants the linearity of quarter sawn without the flake, rift is the answer.

It is also the lowest-yield cut of the three, and the most expensive. Rift sawn white oak in particular carries a premium that surprises teams who specified it from an image without pricing it.

Rift and Quarter Together

A great deal of commercially available stock is sold as rift and quarter sawn, mixing the two. This is not a compromise product — it is a practical response to how the cuts come off the log, and for most applications the visual difference between adjacent rift and quarter boards is minor.

Where it matters is oak, where quarter sawn boards carry fleck and rift boards do not. If the elevation demands uniform linear grain with no flake, specifying rift and quarter will produce a face with intermittent fleck, and that will not read as intended.

Say which you mean, say it in the drawings, and say whether fleck is desired or excluded.
