AWI Casework Standards: Construction Types a Specifier Should Know
The standards define casework by construction type and interface style. Naming the right one turns a vague specification into a comparable bid.
The Architectural Woodwork Standards classify casework by how the doors and drawer fronts relate to the cabinet body. That relationship drives fabrication tolerance, hardware selection, cost, and how the finished run reads.
Naming the type explicitly is one of the cheapest ways to turn a vague specification into one that produces comparable bids.
Flush Overlay
Doors and drawer fronts sit in front of the carcass and cover nearly all of it, separated by a narrow, consistent gap between adjacent fronts.
The elevation reads as a continuous plane of fronts with thin lines between them. The cabinet body disappears. This is the dominant type in contemporary work, and it pairs naturally with frameless construction and integrated pulls.
Because the fronts do the visual work, alignment across a long run is everything. Fronts that are individually correct but collectively drifting produce gap lines that taper, which is the most visible failure mode in this type.
Reveal Overlay
Fronts sit in front of the carcass but leave a wider, deliberate reveal that exposes some of the cabinet body between them.
The reveal becomes a design element — a shadow line articulating each unit. It is more forgiving than flush overlay, because a wider gap absorbs more variation before the eye reads it as uneven.
Specify the reveal dimension. Left unstated, it becomes whatever the shop normally builds, and shop standards vary enough to change the character of the elevation.
Flush Inset
Fronts sit within the cabinet opening, their faces flush with the frame or carcass edge, with a small margin all around.
This is the most demanding type and the most expensive. Every front has to fit its own opening with a consistent margin on all four sides, and because the front sits inside the opening, the material has room to move into the gap seasonally. A margin sized for winter conditions can bind in summer.
Flush inset in a solid wood program, in a climate with wide humidity swings, requires deliberate margin sizing and an acclimation plan. It is worth specifying where the detail matters and worth avoiding where it does not.
Frameless and Face Frame
Running underneath the interface style is the carcass question.
Frameless construction — sometimes called European or 32mm — has no face frame. The carcass edges are finished, hardware mounts directly to the cabinet sides, and the full interior width is usable. It suits flush overlay naturally.
Face frame construction applies a solid wood frame to the front of the carcass. Doors mount to the frame, the frame adds rigidity and a surface for scribing to the building, and the type supports flush inset cleanly.
Neither is superior. They commit you to different hardware, different tolerances, and different interior dimensions, which is why the choice belongs in the specification rather than in the shop.
Writing It So It Binds
Four items resolve most of the ambiguity: the interface style by name, the reveal or margin dimension, the carcass type, and the grade of work.
With those four stated, three fabricators are pricing the same cabinet. Without them, they are pricing three different cabinets and the spread will show it.
